I am living in a second floor condo with an oak floor.
I currently have a 75 gallon tank 48x18x20 placed against a wall not sure if it's weight bearing or not I don't know if the unit below me has the same floor-plan.
I currently have no problems I'm over 200lbs and could practically do jumping jacks without having the water move.
So I am looking to get a 180 gallon acrylic with dimensions
of 72x24x24 am I pressing my luck is my big question the tank will sit perpendicular to the floor joist. feed back and current and prior experiences welcome!

most modern homes can support a reasonably large tank. i have all 3 of my tanks on the main floor, above a basement. no problems here. plus, the tanks are all spread out in different rooms. I would not place all 3 tanks in one room or area of a floor. also, i would not overdo it and place a 500 gallon + tank on a second floor. There probably is a limit.

yea looking to raise a pair of Jags and figured 180 would b a good start but might b cool 2 something bigger if that meant I could shoehorn another fish or 2 in!

If your not sure if it's load-bearing, place your tank on an exterior wall.

90% of the time, floor joists run perpendicular from the longest side of the house.

Also, if it's a newer condo it might have steel framing. If that's the case you all good to go !!! :grinno:

Good luck !!! :headbang2

Also, you can't compare fish tanks to jumping jacks. That's comparing static weight (fish tank) to dynamic weight (you jumping). Just keep an eye on the tank. If you start noticing floor sagging, you gotta move it quick !

Thanks Alex gonna stick with a 180gal and I'm pretty sure It's a load bearing wall so hopefully I'm in good shape.
As long as it doesn't suddenly crash onto or thru the floor I'm happy.

Yeah, I worry about this too...in my previous house I placed the aquarium on the mainfloor, but I made sure it was sitting on a steel joyce visible in the basement. A 55 gallon tank weights 700lbs with rocks and decorations and when full with water.
