I've said time and again, I'm not a big time cichlid guy. Have had very few in my 37 yrs keeping fish.

I have my 9in texas in a 75 alone right now, and I really want to get a female with him. I've had him with oscars and dempseys, and he's killed them all. I tried him and my green terror recently in a 125g, but he started beating the JD really bad, too.

I'm beginning to think he will need to stay solo, but other folks working at LFS here have told me to try a female texas. If I do, should I bring in the female into the 75 while I have him in another tank, then bring him back later? Take him out a couple days, and then put them both in at the same time? What's the best strategy?

When u add new Tankmate for a big fish, install a divider until new fish settles down, when it is stressed, it won't be able to defend itself very well.

That's why I thought maybe removing him and then bring him back after re-arranging and letting her in first. I do have dividers, though.

If I were you..I would keep a tank divider. Keep them separate, feed him pellets for about a week, because pellets keep fish mellow. When you see him mellow go ahead and let loose the female with him. Warning: He still can get aggressive, so keep that in mind. hope this helps.

The good thing is that the fish I have in the one 125g can be moved easily to another tank. I really want to have the two texas in the 125g, so I would have the 75g available if I needed to move one out. I have dividers for the 75/125.

female won't work unless male lost the battle to the female. but it seem like all cichlids don't attack/chase parrot fish.

Once a large aggressive cichlid is kept solo it is unlikely it will accept a new tank mate. Try the divider though and see how it goes. Maybe you will luck out.

That's what my brother says, too. I'm going to give it a try once I can find a female close to his size, and like I said I have the dividers and a back up tank just in case.
