Just browsing species for now, then I will decide what tank I will need, but I want a brackish ray for a tankmate for my pair of Gymnothorax tiles. Something small.......very small if possible, I am NOT getting a St. John's Stingaree, they get WAY too big lol

Anything that might stay under the 20-24" mark?

You can prob acclimate the tiles to full marine conditions and keep them with smaller rays like california round or cortez...or keep them in full fresh with hystrix if u want somethin 20" or less.

The Morays must be gravitated to Brackish fairly soon, but will also enjoy full marine, choice is up to me, however are those 2 rays you mentioned the smallest that can thrive in brackish water? I have already looked into Hystrix and they need full FW and also get bigger than I wanted. Or you are saying Rounds and Cortez need full marine conditions and won't survive in brackish?

Even still, I read Hystrix can reach 28" L

Yeah the california round and cortez would need full marine... i was thinking u could prob meet in the middle so to speak acclimating both eel/rays to brackish but im not certin. def. a question for Zoodiver Zoodiver as hes our resident marine shark/ray guy. for whats its worth id prob just stick to full fresh if ur tiles are already fresh. hystrix/cortez/rounds are all pretty much in the same size category. Seen alot of male hystrix mature and breeding at 10" disc... most hystrix keepers are more than fine with a 6x2...8x2, dont think ive ever seen/heard of one over 16-18" and thatd be big for captivity.. Sure 3' width is always better but not sure what kinda tank ur lookin for. Id go atleast 8x2 or 6x3 footprint, 8x3 even better lol...

Tiles eventually need full marine IF you want to keep them alive... While they may "live" in brackish they seem to do better in salt......

Good to know...yet to have any myself... I guess that sums up this whole debate...looks like ur doin full marine Frank lol... not a bad thing. i think the cortez/rounds may stay a tad smaller than hystrix in the long run.
