Not sure if this comes a lot, I did a quick read through of the forum without seeing anything but I have a single Convict Cichlid, about an inch and a half inch and 3/4ths currently living in my bedroom in a 15G (thin layer of gravel, a clay pot, a driftwood cave, and an Amazon Sword with a TopFin 40 filter) anyway, I'm moving an apartment for college and won't be bringing my main tank but I think I am setting up a 40G tank and would like to move the convict with me.

I have like no ideas on quality tank mates, was wondering for some help from ya guys.

Any ideas?

You could put the convict with a few angelicus pictus catfish and a firemouth. You could find the convict a mate and let them breed like the water rabbits they are. Its depends on what you really want.

hmm.... I do want some kind or multiple kinds of cats/plecs cause I'm really starting to like them.

The firemouth is alright looking I guess, kinda like a Convict tbh (instead of black stripes, a just like black dots and then red like the females, but much more, and then that nice dot)

Anything else you guys thinking besides the firemouth?

thanks for all help guys

it depends on what cats you want angelicus pictus get about 4 or 5" so you could put 3 or 4 at the most. you could also put 3 or 4 bristle nose plecos but they make just as much of a mess as they clean. you could put honduran red points, salvinis, cutteris.becareful though all these fish and cross bredd with convicts. if you wanted to go with something different you could do a dwarf green pike cichlid but they are very territorial, aggressive and predatory.

If we're talking long term tankmates a salvini won't be a good one and it would outgrow the 40 fast. Is your convict a male of a female? A single con isn't aggressive so if you want some kind of cat in there I suggest looking into corydoras. They shoal together and it looks really cute:grinyes:. For plecos I suggest bristlenose plecs. Get 2 or 3 depending on what number you're comfortable with. Build your tank around your con. Adding another cichlid in there would just cause territorial issues and they might end up killing each other.

BTW, did you want a community setup or something different?

True about the salvinis. A single con can be super aggressive it all depends on the fish. My brother and i have a con that's been in a 29 with 2 four line pictus and the con harrasses the pictus cats and both are 3" bigger them him. Also if he adds both cichlids at the same time there's less of a possiblity that they will battle for territory since both will be added to new territory that hasn't been established by either yet. He could also leave the tank bare till he adds the other cichlid the convict wont have nothing to claim ad territory. Then once the new cichlid has adjusted put the decor in and let them establish their territories.

It does depend on the fish cause I have 1 of my breeding pair in a 40 with their fry, some jd fry, rummynose Tetras, blood fin tetras, and a bunch of cories. They ignore everyone but chase each other around.

its a single male convict, he use to be in a tank with a red tail shark and a school of tiger barbs (it was a tank a little bit smaller then a 40G) he was territorial and got aggressive (which is why hes no longer in that tank) also I no longer have the RTS (he passed :( )

Tin foil barbs make good dithers for cons also they grow bigger and can easily out swim a Con.
I noticed with my bigger cichlids if something is as big or bigger then a cichlid they have a good chance of surviving cause the con will see a threat but knows it's too small to do something about it.
