Tankmate size

Is there any "rule of thumb" about how large a tankmate needs to be, so that the polys are not prone to eat or bite a chunk out of them? I have a foot long Endi that has been raised with a couple of angelfish in the tank (adults) that I am starting to get concerned about. Also I have 3 3" dats that will be here in a couple weeks that I don't want to disappear.
