I have an oscar that I could never be rid of, but I hope to expand and make a much larger tank. If I say that tank size and proper care are of no obstacle, what would be some good tankmates? I'm not really looking for more cichlids...I want to know if they can be with other different fish, such as arowanas, rays, etc.. anybody have some good ideas for me? I'm looking to have a full community, top swimmers, middle swimmers, and bottomfeeders! :) my oscar is still a baby, so now would be a great time to know

Has he always lived in a tank by himself?

To answer your question, yes it can but you should give us a estimate of what your bigger tank size will be.

yeah he's all by himself, i have a few plecos with him.. but other than that. and alright, i guess im aiming for just shy of a 200 gal tank. probably a 180. sound good?

Hmm how big is he?

If you're getting a 180, Getting an arowana shouldnt be in your future. I'm not very good with stocking advice since you took away the group of fish that I'm pretty comfortable with. Maybe.. some Silver Dollars? Those are pretty boring though. I'm pretty sure some other people will come along and give you better suggestions.

rays and arowanas are out of the picture for you since you are thinking about a 180. you would need something in the 300 + gallon range for those. a lima shovelnose catfish would be good for you in that size tank. a few nice bichirs would get along with the oscar

You probably want a nice diurnal catfish in the 10" to 15" range. Perhaps a mature sun cat or four-lined pim?

i was just throwing arowana/rays out there for suggestion type stuff im looking for! id probably never be able to care for a ray or an arowana lol. that requires a massive amount of water for sure. alright, now for actual information. I'm interested in the concept of catfish(particularly the lima shovelnose and sun cat), and as for bichirs..close. are there any eel species that wouldnt get beaten up or not fit in this tank? im really biased towards anything that has fluvial motion when it swims, its one of the most relaxing things to view imo!

A fire eel and tire track get too big for a 180g. And I would be afraid to keep a peacock or zig zag with an Oscar.
