I am planning to start a red bay snook (P. Spledita) breeding project in a 125G tank. The idea is to buy a group of juveniles and let them pair off, removing extras once the pair forms. I know these are big fish and will appreciate all of the space 125 can offer. I was wondering however if I could keep a couple of tankmates (dithers) with them. Aside from the usual size and aggression concerns there is just one stipulation: It has to come from Central America (I am obssessive compulsive when it comes to biotopic aquariums  ). I was thinking along the lines of synsipilum or something but they get too big. On the other hand anything that maxes at less than 10" can potentially be eaten in the future. Any recommendation?

I have a group of 7 that are now 8 or 9", nice peacefull fish .....unless you can fit into their mouth.

Yes, I was thinking about a JD too

Repair: Are you suggesting keeping these guys as a colony? This would be perfect since my plan is to get a group of juviniles anyways... The only concern is that snooks grow robust and so just how many would I be able to keep in a 125 as adults is questionable

I could show you how to use my drip system........ then you can keep almost anything you want.

I think that a colony is the best way to keep them.

Not sure if this is a proper section to discuss filtration but I would love to learn more about this drip system of yours. Feel free to PM me if you want

The more I think about the idea of splendida colony, the more I like it. Unless someone else suggests otherwise, I think that this is exactly what I am going to do :headbang2

I've just got a Snook for my american community tank too, he's a weapon, great fish! He's in with some Sevs, a Blackbelt, a JD, Nic etc, etc... So fay he's snabbed one Buenos Ares Tetra amd that's all!!! (Waiting, waiting!! Ha ha!)

I'll whack up some pics another time!

Cheers,
Pete.

I have a large 12" Snook in an 90 and he gets along great with some large Gouramis, Some Medium size Bichirs, and a Tulip Eel. Anything smaller than 6" has been eatin by him or the tulip eel.
