So I put my little buttikoferi (5") in his new castle a little over a week ago. He was in a 90 Gallon african community tank since he was under an inch but quickly outgrew everyone. So I put him in a 150 gallon to share with an equally sized red terror. This arrangement only lasted 24 hours before I found a murdered terror with bite marks all over.

I added 12 tiger barbs to help him settle in and chase but he totally ignores them. they school around the 150 without a care in the world. I'm thinking of adding a few jewel cichlids or small fast africans like johanni or auratus. I've decided he shouldn't share space with another monster so the 150 should be plenty of space for him to grow up happily.

Any recos on other small tank mates?

I have a 6.5" Buttikoferi in a 180 gallon with several large NW Cichlids and he does fine. Actually he is somewhat dominated by a 8in Jag, 10in Midas, and a 9in Vieja Zonatus. Even my 6" Paratalapia Polleni doesn't back down from him. I've heard on several occasion that they do best with large CA/SA Cichlids.

I ended up putting him with 6 jewel cichlids, all about half his size. They back down to him the second he turns their way but it's fun having lots of movement in the tank.

I'm losing about a barb a week with no evidence to be found. I guess they're getting eaten as fast as they're getting picked off. All in all i think I'm done stocking the tank. I'll take some progress pics as he grows

I saw baby Dovii at my LFS the other day and almost made an impulse buy but cooler heads prevailed. I'm going to stick with what I have, if the butti ends up being the only fish in the 150 and lives a decade i'll be happy :-)

Check out the pics in my album,I have a breeding pair of Buttikoferi and a breeding pair of Dovii in the same 200 gal tank. There all insanely aggressive but they are all just too mean to hurt eachother,it doesn't make much sense but if you saw it,you'd understand...

which one is the male and which one is the female
