Hello. I was wondering if you could keep archocentrus or SA cichlids with C. asellus. Does anybody know? What kind of tankmates can you keep with this species?

Thanks.

I don't know about the cichlids but as far as the puffer avoid slow, long finned fish- my 4 bet up on a rather aggressive female angel I had (she was re-homed). Remember not to home them with other fish that could try and eat them- they are poisonous and you would lose 2 fish in that case (at least). Currently keep mine with various catfish and kuhli loaches with no problems. But that is no guarantee that your puffers will not fin nip or eat smaller fish.

thanks. I stumbled across a free setup and my gf wants puffers. I want to breed archocentrus cichlids to feed to my piranha. Obviously I can't feed SA puffers to my piranha because they're poisonous so I'm looking for other options. Even if I can't breed feeders, I would like to have some dwarf cichlids in the mix.

thanks

Yeah, puffers are an interesting group. I have had multiple members of the same species with totally opposite personalities. One of the species would be highly aggressive while the other wouldn't even think about hurting a guppy if it had the opportunity. This may simply be the personality difference between sexes… but I am not 100% sure. My only advice is that each puffer is unique. You will have to use your best judgment. And even then, you may wake up one morning and find that the puffer is bloated from the midnight massacre of his tankmates! Use caution!

Or you stick your hand it to clean and he bites you.

I keep piranhas. I'm familiar with the hazards of fish teeth.

Does anybody know if it's cool to keep SA puffers in a planted tank?

I'm also looking into these for my GF's tank (29G). I'm thinking of putting 2 or 3 in with a few small Loaches & a small Pleco (Rubbernose probably). You know...basically snail hell! Any issues with that combo? Thanks!
