Hey all,

I rescued a clown knife from Petco about a year ago, was 3", maybe 5-6" now. He was born with one eye, as there is just an empty hole where his other eye would be. He didn't look so well so I brought him home and put him in my 55gal. I know this will not be big enough in the future, and I have a huge tank (don't know what gallon-age, but like maybe 6ftx2ftx2ft-ish) sitting around to set up for when he does reach that size...

ANYWAY he's fine now, and he's in with a Geo. Jurupari and Surinamensis of similar size, and a wicked old blue gourami that is on its way out. So far, he has eaten a 12" fire eel and a 4" BGK that were in the tank, but won't touch the gourami. Please no criticism, I knew this was a risk when I put him in. I only feed him frozen and flake food. Any suggestions of tankmates for "One-eyed Jack"? Thanks all.

They have deceivingly large mouths.

They do good with other large fish that arent overly aggressive.
Oscars are often kept with them as well as arowana (silver)

If I were you, i would set up that large tank and put him in there BEFORE he gets too big for the 55.
That way you can look for the appropriate tank mates. Right now, the only tank mates that he will do well with are also too big for a 55.

I hate to differ, but a 6 inch Clown is not going to touch a 12 inch Fire Eel, or any other 12 inch eel. Take a physics, or an A/P class would you? :)

Clown knives can be kept with a huge array of fish actually.

you're talking to him right?

CKs are pretty good large community fish. You could put them with a bunch of large fish...Pacus, Oscars, Arowanans, etc.

yeah I would not have thought it possible for my fire eel to be consumed by it but it happened right before my eyes. They had gotten along well for a couple months but then all of a sudden I was just getting ready to shut the light off and go to bed when the knife bit its midsection and did not let go. I quickly put my hand in the tank to separate the two and put a divider in the tank for the night, and in the morning the fire eel was nowhere to be seen.

So being the idiot I was at the time I removed the divider. The fire eel was in the gravel somewhere probably where the knife couldn't get at it.

When I got home from work I found half of the eel drifting on the bottom of the tank. I had not fed the fish since that morning but the knife's belly was unusually full.

And I did take calculus-based physics, by the way... and did quite well.

So,
he ate HALF the eel. You didn't mention that in the first place

Just jerking your chain - relax - but I knew it wasn't going to be the whole eel.

The thing with clown knifes and usually arrowanas they are usually defesnsive towards any fish that eaats the same food as it does. The jurapari is not a big fish eater and the gourami definetely isnt. They are safe fore that reason but the knife will be very teritorial towards those other fish.

yeah sorry about that, I'm not trying to piss anyone off thats trying to help me out. I should have been more specific.

But thanks for the help. I had heard of oscars and stuff, but I'll probably end up setting up the new tank sooner than expected and adding a couple arowanas to the tank. any suggestions? jardini, silver, etc. whats inexpensive (relatively) and readily available that looks cool?

As I said, they get along with just about anything - just not smaller, or thin bodied fish - you can be creative.
I've kept them with all sorts of fish.
