I read that a while ago, very nice post. You know you're stuff...

I have searched all over and this is what i have found.

I have compared water parameters for fish I might want against clowns and the firemouths from my findings are very close to the loaches. With some weening of water chemistry the ranges of hardness and pH look possible.

However i really wanted the experts to have a say. It seems you are against my plans... "Cichlids" is a broad range of fish and "SA/CA" covers many types of fish from that region. What is your experience with cichlids/clowns?

I am rather new and curious in general...

I have XL Sev's and Uaru's currently with my loaches, no issues....GL

Rams and Cl's would be a nice look..btw..try and stay away from cichlid pairs, if they lay eggs all cichlids become aggressive

Been looking at the Rams too.. They also stay rather small at 3-4" It seems some species of cichlids are aggressive others more peaceful depending on the tank conditions. But any cichlid can become aggressive when spawning/mating. I am trying to stay honest with myself and find a generally good match personality wise with CL's.

The CL's will outgrow my tank in the first year or so and am keeping eyes open for a much larger tank. Basically looking for any good deal in my area.

CL's grow slow, 1" to 1.5" a year up to the 5"-6" mark. Then they tend to slow down even more. So you may have a while to find a larger tank

I'm going to start another Cl grow out tank here shortly , with Discus and rams .

GL post pics of your final set up and choice......

I have nothing held up against your plans. Most SA/CA cichlids can work just fine such as severums, acaras and keyholes but there are several others that should be watched as they can become unpredictable and may suddenly harass the loaches without warning.

The fact that they do grow slowly is only excuse I have for allowing myself to keep them in a 30G for any period of time.
As stated earlier I have witnessed a tank with a solitary discus over a summer and it was not very happy in a 75G with a crowd of loaches. As Lupin made it clear as well, discus need friends or they become very unhappy. Stressed and sickly was my observation.

The Rams are up there on my list as well. And pics will be a given,,:)

I was pretty defensive... It's been loads of research and then to feel attacked, well my bad.

Severums..? I thought they would be more aggressive in a smallish tank. I'll have to dig deeper. The coloration and shape would be a unique addition to my stock list. Keyholes are not out of the equation.
The SA/CA seem to have some very peaceful and colorful fish that make it easy to stock in a community.
