Tankmates for convicts + maculipinnis/ellioti?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi there, so I'm getting a 4ft soon (not sure on other dimensions, pretty sure it's 18"x18"). Now, I'm going to have in there a maculipinnis/ellioti and 3 female convicts (so that there won't be any convict breeding hence hopefully no complete territorial claiming) as well, the ones I really care about. In fact, I sorta already have all of them together (in a smaller tank). I'll also toss in my current six bristlenoses coz they've been doing fine with the americans.

What I am looking at now though, is other types of fish to add in. Just wondering, assuming that I'm just adding one extra type of fish, what may work? What's the minimum numbers that I should/could add, and what's the optimal?

Here's a short list of what I currently have in mind/is available in Brissie (Aussielands):

Angelfish
Discus
Kissing Gourami
Dwarf Gourami
Tiger Barbs
Africans (blech)
Bristlenoses (more? L numbers?)
Ghost Knives
Clown Loaches
Corydoras
Featherfin catfish
Plecos
Yoyo Loaches

The last time I tossed guppies into my tank the maculipinnis went straight for 'em and attempted to eat a few of them (though it couldn't manage to swallow any of 'em). But perhaps large enough numbers of guppies/shrimps/snails may work?

I dunno. Ideas?

T. Mac get about 7" full grown and very aggressive. I had a 7" male that kept all of my other cichlids (larger a. Robertsoni, JD, h.deppi) in a 6' 150g at one end of the tank.
It sounds like you are getting a 75g. Stocking depends on how many t. Mac and cons you have.
If you do add I would suggest a school of tetras. I know people will suggest silver dollars but large fast moving tetras like that need a 6' tank.

:O I never knew T. macs get aggressive, always thought Thorichthys species are relatively non-aggressive. XD Hm hm. Well I am keeping one T. mac and three convicts, so a total of four... potentially very aggressive fish I guess?

Never actually thought about tetras, might try them. How many do you reckon I should get for the tank?

Also I don't like silver dollars, they look ugly imo. :P

If ur t. Mac pairs up with one of the females they might harass the other 2. I suggest just getting a female t. Mac, a female con, and another female fish like cutteri or salvini. Something that doesn't grow too big.
