I have 3 green sunfish ranging from 2-3 inches long. They're currently in a 40 gallon breeder, but are getting upgraded to a 120 fatboy. ( I'm actually picking up the tank today).

I was wondering what kind of tank mates, if any, I could stock with them. I tried a central mudminnow, but they just thought it was food.

I really want some yellow perch, but if the greens don't like them, I have no place for the perch.

Any advice?

I've kept greens with yellows and unless the perch can fit in its mouth then it won't be a problem. Unless your sunfish are a-holes then maybe.

I'm pretty sure they thought the minnow was food.
I could see how they react to cichlids. I have a yellow lab tank and could try one of those.

other sunfish? most sunfish have an attitude greens especially. big enough perch might work. madtoms would be a good tank mate as they can hold there own. shinners or chubs could work as there fast enough to avoid them. success with sunfish seems to mostly come down to tank setup lots of rocks/plants/wood to break up sight lines goes a long way.

In our pond (only a few hundred gal or so) ours did well with koi, channel cats, bluegill,(although it was a massive gill), a clawless crawdad, red earded slider(that's iffy), and salamanders that would show up after rain and stick around. There were 3 that ranged from 2-5inches and were fun to keep. They can be aggressive but love their hiding places. In the lake I used to fish at the small ones would stay in holes and crevasses sometimes close together without problems(as in 3 in a 2 foot area). One of ours would have it's mouth to the top of the water and eat worms before they hit the water

What if I keep the sunfish in the 40 gallon for a while yet and add the new fish that I want to the 120? That would give the new fish time to adjust to the tank and stake out territory. Then add the greens about a month later?
