I have a pair of natural blue acara and 1 young male convict. Was thinking about some Colombian tetra and zebra danios as dither, but do not want them to be a snack....

What do you think?

Some Colombian tetras at half or adult size could work.
Danios may be a stretch, unless the tank is large enough to not have cornering spots ( a 6 ft tank might work, I'd be suspect of anything smaller..
But even with the tetras, if the tank is small enough that they are easily cornered, they may last alittle longer.
In my Andinoacara tank, I use tetras that are at least 2/3 the size of the cichlids, so not a problem.

I had a 3" an Agonostomus monicola migrate from a different tank, to a 180 gal tank where the Andinoacara were spawning.
A very similar shaped fish to danios, although larger, at almost 3 .

It had vanished by the next day."

Tetras yes, zebra danios no.
Giant danios would be good though.
