I got a pair of convicts and was wondering what would be some good tankmates for them? Right now its just the cons in a 55. Any suggestions

also happy fathers day to all the dads out there :headbang2

If they are a spawning pair, i wouldnt waste the time with any other cichlid tank mates. Ive had spawning pairs of cons take over tanks 265g and smaller with tank mates 6x their size.

They dont care about other cichlids sizes/teeth/attitude etc and will harass other cichlids to death if left to do so.

Id add some tetras or other smaller fast fish...maybe a small growing pleco or catfish...but plecos and cats arent always safe from aggression either.

would a birchir work with them ?

I'd say a trimac, or some oscars, but vrwc seems to have more experience with that not turning out to well. But there are many different species of beautiful plecos that get fairly large enough to hold there own. Maybe a butterfly pleco.

I think a 55 gallon is a bit too small for a most bichir species and too small for an Oscar with other tank mates. I'd do something fun like a large school of 12-14 Buenos Aires Tetras or Giant Danios. It would add tons of movement to the tank and they're fast and mild mannered enough to stay out of the way of your cons. This would make the con pair the center piece of the tank and the large school would accent that real nice. IME plecos are usually slow guys that don't move around much and add quite a bit to the bioload. I think the school would be more beneficial in this scenario since they'd add lots of movement and visual aesthetics and be lighter on the bioload since it's only a 55g.

im not big on oscars anyways so that wont matter, ill have to check out the tetras, got any other suggestions

you can get a bristlenose pleco, some striped raphaels, maybe a green terror, some more aggressive catfish, or a firemouth

Firemouths, Salvinis, JD.
