Our power has been flicking on and off this morning, and when I called my husband he said I should post here to ask you guys (and ladies) what to do in case the power goes out. What would we need to do for the tanks if the power were to go out? He has already said that even if it means buying a generator, that's what we'll do, we just are clueless about it right now.

Thanks!!

As long as you don't loose power for a sustained period of time, you should be fine. Keep an eye on your filter(s) though. Sometimes loss of power can cause air to enter the intake and could burn up the motor. You live in NC, so you should have no problems with the tanks getting too cool. In the event that you would loose power for several hours, you should probably just invest in some battery powered air pumps to keep things circulating and gas exchange at the surface going. Now, if you fear that you may loose power for several days, a generator would certainly be in order. I hope that helps.

Thanks to both of you, and the suggestions definitely help. I'm going to talk to him about getting some sort of battery powered backups. Hopefully we'd never need to use them, but we really should have things around "just in case".

yeah like the other posters said, buy a battery backup-we have one on our 180 gallon that is connected to the sump-that way if we lose power, the sump is still going. they are definately worth every penny.

Where can I find this and how much do they run?

You can get one at Best Buy or any similar retailer. Not sure on the price.

You'll need to know how many watts what you'd be running on it would be, that way you determine how much run time you'll get from it. I only have an air pump and a canister connected to it. Don't run a heater, just add warm water, a heater will suck it dry in no time. And this solution is only for short term power outages, for long term definately get some BPAP's and a sponge filter or two.

Have a look here at sizes and prices, Newegg is the ONLY place to buy computer stuff

Depending on the size and numbers of your fish this may work. a while back Light Gas and Water shut the power off to our area for almost a week. I bought 2 55g PVC barrels, a water lily for each and floated about 5-6 water hyacith plants on top and kept them outside in the shade. Only problem i has was aggression amongst the african cichlids. I slapped a battery-op air pump on there for a few hours a day
