I have asked this question before but i am 12 months down the track and i am still getting issues with my 2 favorite pieces of mopani wood. they turn my water brown and i have been forced to surrender them to the garage floor again.
I have tried purigen and it made no difference i now have a rather large plecco that was added to the tank today and would like to put the wood back in.
Any advice on tannin removal would be great.
My tank is a 220 gal with medium to low stocking levels with an fx5 .

Water changes and carbon. You could try soaking it in HOT water first to leech some out, but I suspect it will always leech some tannins until it's done.

Boil em

I had the same problem with Mopani wood and because it was such a large piece is was a horror to try and boil over the stove. What I ended up having to do is get a large bin and place the wood in there. I placed it on the counter and used the sink hose to spray hot, hot water all over the piece of wood. I think with the pressure and the pretty much boiling water I was able to leach out a majority of the Tannins after rinsing it, eh, 4-5 times. Between each rinse I used a siphon to drain all of the water out and into the sink. It still discolored my water slightly, to a faint yellow, but after one water change it was unnoticeable. Hope that helps some!

Thanks boiling seems to be the trick but i would need a bathtub and a fire to boil these pieces , they are about 3'x3' each i will try boil half at a time..

Its seems the members have your answer. boil boil boil and carbon...

I am going to set up a second fx5 with carbon only and see if there is any improvement thanks for the tips,

Thanks guys i added the carbon to the top basket of the fx5 and 4 hours later i can see 1/4 the amount of tannin.
I guess the first time i tried carbon it was the little rod type stuff and about half the quantity i used .
This carbon is little granules and i packed the top basket as full as it would go and put a blue pad on top and now its great.
Can anyone tell me how often it will last under normal conditions.
