To get rid of tannins, I know you can put in some carbon and it'll do some work, but I want to know if I can just float some in my tank, or do I have to put it in my filter to get it to start clearing the tank?

Water changes remove it completely...What is causing the tannin buildup?

You could float a pouch of carbon in the tank, but it would get the best exposure to the water being in the filter with all the water passing through it

Why do you want to get rid of the tannins? It does not hurt.

The tannins will lower the ph by about .40 , just increase the water changes till all the tannins leech out of the driftwood...

or


leech the driftwood in a diferent tub of water...

Most fish tend to look better when there are tannins. What are your fish in the tank? Plenty of fish that hail from soft acidic waters should be fine.

i would suggest putting the carbon where the most water flows. i recently set up a new tank with some unrinsed drift wood and had brown water. i hung an extra bag of carbon in front of the output for my FX5 and it cleared up noticeably in only 24 hours.
