Tannins

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This comes up alot. Tannins I'm my opinion is personal preference. Some people don't like the brown tinge. Unless your using it to soften the water for breeding or creating a more natural environment for wild fish it's just all preference. Myself I can go either I have had both

A lot of people don't like the look, but I'm a fan, especially in my monster cat tank. It gives a more natural look, which I prefer. Also, I've read in several places that it is beneficial to fish health. I don't remember specifics but I believe it helps their immune system and lowers stress levels

I don't think about tannins, but I am a big fan of Indian almond leaves; I've had good success with them for shrimp, and general well being. If they produce a slight tinge, so be it; I think they also enhance the look of a tank, being littered on the bottom

For freshwater I do refer tannish/blackwater look in my biotope setup, it does look more nature than a crystal clear water, seem odd to watch your fish swim in a thin air...if you know whats I meant, the only tank that I want super sparkling crystal clear water is my saltwater tank.

I have given it a go on my current tank using Alder cones. I may have gone a little to dark though. I do like it and once the Geos get bigger and start to show more colour I think it will look even better.13603609_1439551762725472_1732989439320833832_o.jpg 13641295_1441570695856912_8478284718279138231_o.jpg

I'm also refer dark water setup in freshwater tank.
About your tank water, you can try to adjust the water darkness with your own judgement hehehe if its look good for you then keep it that way.

I too, have a biotope and find it looks better when fish are in their natural setup.

Tannins have antimicrobial properties so that's a plus since my fish always love to bicker.
