I want to set up a marine tank. My well water has nitrate. Will the API Tap Water Filter take out nitrates? Anyone know what else will take them out
besides an Ro unit? An Ro is going to be my last resort. All opinions welcome.

Nope i don't think that will remove nitrates. Even most R/O units cannot remove nitrates. It sells for about $100 so why not put forth another couple of bucks and get a small R/O unit that removes nitrates. Marine tanks do not require alot of water changes. Just enough to replace trace elements.

If i'm correct and i don't know a thing about saltwater, deep sand bed filters, refugiums, and a protein skimmer would make quick work out of a small amount of nitrates.

Where in Massachusetts is there nitrates in the tap?

he said he has a well.... I would go last resort and get a RO/DI this will be your best bet dealing with well water that is probally pretty hard as well

get an RO/DI unit its your best bet and its way better for your fish... Some fish also MUST have RO/DI water such as rays because they are so sensitive to bad water For reefs it is also sugested you get an RO/DI as bad water can kill your corals very easily

We run RO/DI water in all of our tanks and reciently upgraded from a 150gpd unit to one with an output closer to 80gph...

Be careful with an R/O unit on a well it could cause the well pump to run continuously

Good point and on a well it would be a good idea to run an auxillery pressure pump on the unit.

Sorry, haven't been around for a while. Thanks for all the answers but now I've got another question. How can an R/O cause my well pump to run continuously? Do you mean just the time it takes to make thirty gallons or so?
And yeah, I'd better use an r/o pump. I've got the pressure running low at 35 psi.
