I would like to start off with saying HI. This is my first post I am new here. This site is amazing. I am getting back in to keeping fish . Been out of it for almost ten years. I stared off with a 55 gallon Mbuna tank………..Thanks

I do a 25-30 % water change every Sunday on my 55 gallon tank. I have an AC 70 and a 110. When I do a water change I turn every thing off. Because the filter do a lot of splashing even on low when the tank level is dropped low. I keep a one gallon jug of water under my tank. I use it to bring the water back up to full level from time to time.
When I turn the filters off I have to prime them before I turn them back on. So I use the one gallon of water the I keep under my tank .I treat the water before I fill up the filter. Then I refill the jug for next week. I know it is bad to wash the filter sponge with tap water. But is it bat to just refill the filter with treated tap water that is a week old?

nope i don't think that it is a problem

btw welcome to mfk

Hi and welcome to a fellow Ohioan.
No, there's nothing wrong with what you're doing. The treated water has no chlorine or heavy metals, so there will be no damage to the bacteria.
I just use a dedicated cup and prime my filters with tank water. Your way should cause no problems whatsoever.

Welcome to ]\/[FK

I prime my filters with a 2 qt pitcher, I just use tank water. I have one at home for the tanks at home & one at work for the tank there.

If (when) the filters loose prime, I just dip then pour, my filters hold between 1 & 2 qts so it's perfect.

As far as aged tap water, if it has been sitting for a week, even unconditioned, I would trust it to be safe on the BB.

No problems with how you are adding water.
Just wanted to ask how stocked are you keeping the tank?
Only asking b/c your water change % seems high; not that its bad for the tank, its just alot of work.

:welcome: :mwave: .

You were never really gone, you were just taking a long time to think about your next tank...:D

Sounds like your doing well, how long has the new tank been up?

Do I take it you have a cover and thats the reason for the jug of water?

4 more posts and you can put up pix, so start typin'...

The jug has to be uncapped for the water to offgass.

Thanks guys I just wanted to be safe………I never even thought about a n extra pitcher to dip in the tank. That is a good idea.

Chico right now I have
4 yellow labs
1 male
saulosi
2 female saulosi
3 acei
3 red zebra
1 moorii
Water themp 80
PH 5.2
Gh 12
Kh 14
Nitrate 5 I try to keep it under 5 that’s why I change 25-30% of the water every sunday

The main reason I keep the jug is for evaporation on the tank. It’s not a lot but I keep my house 72 in the winter . 2 hours before I add the water I set it close to a heater vent and it heats the waster to about 79. I keep my tank 80. To me I think that is a easer then adjusting the tap water just to add a small amount.

I forgot tank was fully cycled end of December. All fish are under 3”. their are all still juveniles.

Aging the water for 24 hours will allow the chlorine to gas off so letting it sit for a week is plenty. As long as your tap water does not have chloramines, you should be ok.
