How does everyone here treat your tap water for aquarium use? I just use prime as I python the water in. Is this the best method? I have heard of people 'aging' water. What is the big idea here? I have also seen tap water filters for aquariums. They are spendy, but if I could eliminate the need for prime-like products, I might save in the long run. Any ideas? I am guessing there are a lot of people out there with a bazillion gallons that need to be treated often with good ideas. Thanks!

Sorry...new to this site, and I need to use up my first 5 posts!

At least your honest!

Ahem....so any ideas out there? I am sure there are tons of posts just like this out there. I have been looking in the 'Setup and Filtration' forum for this info, but haven't found a good thread. Pointing me in the right direction would be sufficient...but personal experience would be better!

I do 50% daily water changes on both my 150-gallon & 22-gallon sometimes even twice daily on the 150-gallon (if there is lots of poop on the bare-bottom-tank)

I just use a garden hose on the 150 and dose with Prime for the entire tank volume.

On the 22-gallon tank I treat the small amounts of water with PRIME FIRST, then add it by hand with a few trips and a rubbermaid box.

I do it this way on the 22-gallon because I can :) I am sure its better to treat the tap water itself before adding it to the tank, plus you can use less Prime.

But with the large tanks/garden hoses this is not possible.

I usually treat the whole 150 gallon tank with 4-caps of Prime during a 50% change, adding the 4th cap at the end of the change just for some extra protection, so I end up treating 200-gallons of water.

Been doing this for MONTHS now with no problems, except that I am using lots of Prime :)

I ordered my first 1.1-gallon container of Prime the other day from Big Als I used to buy the 250ml! Then I thought I will buy the 500ml (which seems a bit harder to find) but I plan on using the 1.1-gallon from now on.

Yeah, I do pretty much the same with my tanks. 50% changes weekly which amounts to over 100 gallons of water that needs to be treated. I just feel like I am spending a considerable amount of money on water treatment alone. Maybe I should stop worrying and just chalk this up to the cost of the hobby...hmm....
