nowhere
just moved into this house two weeks ago, managed to bring all my water and everything from my 75 gallon marine tank to the new house and it was time for a water change last week. i tested my tap water and everything was great! nitrates were even 0. so i was down in the basement doing wash and i saw some sort of ultraviolet sterilization filter built into the home plumbing. i want to take a picture to see if someone can identify if this is something that is like a RO/DI filter and will give me the best possible water for my aquarium. but anyone ever see some sort of filtration like this that isnt RO/DI? i think i have a copper test but i couldnt find it after i moved. i will have to dig around more. what does everyone think?

hey wall... do you know what this filter could possibly be that is hooked up to my home water? i have pictures i could post if you could help(waits for answer.....)

well a picture would certainly help. is the house serviced by culligan or another water company?? Typically if it is a sterilizer, you probably have some bad tap water with possible pathogens etc... A UV will not give you 0 nitrates. I do find it hard to believe that tap water has no nitrates because nitrates are common in all water sources as bacteria break down etc. As a last statement to this, 1 filter will not give you good tap water generally. Depending on where you live, and well or municiple, tap water has many other organics that several filters will need to be used. RO/DI uses simple principles. sediment filter, carbon block, membrane for the RO process, and DI resin to help eliminate even more organics. What i would do is test you water strait out of a water bib (outside hose hook up) and then compair out of your faucet. Any plumber in his right mind, would not waste any filters on outside water lol. This should help you determine what water you have before possible filters and after. Get those pics up and we can tell you more.

so apparently i dont know how to test my tap water... didnt you read that i tested it twice because i didnt believe i had 0 out of the tap because i have never tested tap water at a house i live in and it come up with 0. i registered at a different forum and posted the pictures and all on there for help. thanks but no thanks, this happens too often when i post questions on here. i think alot of the traffic on this site is fake traffic so the site doesnt get shut down. you get 1,000,000 threads asking the same question(ie. can i fit this tang in a 10 gallon? thread) that get answered within 10 minutes of posting, but then i see legitimate questions posted(some by me and some by other peopl) that go unanswered for days. do i have to start another thread for this or can someone tell me how to delete a profile off this forum?

You don't delete your profile on here. You just walk away. There has been a few threads on this.

There are a lot of different kind and styles of whole filters, so with out a picture and some info off the ID tag it would be impossible to find out what it is and what it does. Some need to be serviced regularly and others just need to be replaced every ten years or so depending on usage.

The best way to test the quality of your tap water is with a TDS (total dissolved solids) meter. For reef grade water it should be ideally under 10.

no need to flame. Also in my remark I never stated you dont know how to test water, just that tap water having 0 nitrates is highly unlikely. Also you never said you tested your water twice. There are tons of veriables that can cause a test to fail, not just the user. Besides, as I mentioned in my first reply, you cant expect us to know what your talking about with out pictures and more information. You also have yet to tell us if your house is serviced or not.
