looking for some target fish for my juvenile red tiger motaguense. They are about 5” max. Was thinking giant danios which I use and lose maybe 1 a month with other Cichlids or possibly Buenos Aires tetras. I understand I will lose some or all but I would like my mota to hide less. So any recommendations for target fish something cheap fast and hardy that will last as long as possible.

What is the dimensions of the aquarium ?

It’s a standard 90 gallon they are in 48” x 18” and 20 something high

I was going to suggest Spotted SD's but aquarium would need minimum of 6 ft. to keep them from swimming into the aquarium glass and to escape from the RTM.

The Buenos Aires Tetra is a great option also livebearer such as Swordtails may work.

Your tank doesn't really have enough space for anything mentioned above to survive the speed and accuracy of a motaguense.
And anything large enough would overcrowd the system.
I agree with dan 518, you'd be better off waiting, simply from the standpoint that if you can't keep up with the predation, it probably means aren't quarantining the new arrivals long enough, with the result of adding a disease to the cichlid tank.
You'd be better off adding 2 or 3 extra female motaguense, and allowing the mating process to take a more natural selection course.

I agree with Dan and Duanes.
I don't like the term target fish. I like compatible tank mates that can reduce shyness but not if they are going to take a beating.
The tank is too small for the Moto on its own in my opinion.
Floating plants and overhead cover like branches and a dimly lit corner to your tank can work. Make the fish feel secure instead of giving it something to harass.

They are 5” and that’s being generous. It’s dim lighting on one side and floating plants on the other with tons of caves on bottom. They are active only when they think I’m gone I have to sit a chair off to the side and sit there for a while before they will come out. I have observed how fast they are like lightning bolts and I can imagine they would make short work of target fish. I am after getting them comfortable around me and with the success I have had with other Cichlids and giant danios I wondered if there was something that would work with them. The reason I asked is like I said I’ve seen how fast they are, much quicker than the other Cichlids I have kept these are the first parachromis I’ve kept.
