Hey guys!! I am here with a question about my male Red Eared Slider. He is being super aggressive to my other turtle, Zoey, who is a 3 inch pink belly side neck. I can't put them together because of it. Zoey needs a bigger tank, but my rooms floor won't allow another large tank. I have decided that I want to build an outdoor pond for my RES. The thing is, how will I teach her to hibernate? I am worried that she will let herself freeze because she won't know what to do. He is about 3 years old and hasn't been hibernated through any winters because I wasn't planning on moving her outdoors. What do I do? Please help!!

this has always been an interest to me... since my big snapper excaped on me years ago .. i sure hope they can adapt.....

I think if the water is slowly cooled the turtle will transition itself to hibernation. I raised a softshell turtle in my tank for 2 years. This past summer I put it outside in a trough. When the weather got colder as winter months came it went into hibernation. About six weeks ago I brought her into the house kept her in a bucket where it continued to stay in Hibernation.

My turtles are in unheated tanks and go into a semi hybernation during the winter. I don't light the tanks from November to March and only ambiant room lighting is present. They reach a point where they refuse food when that happens they don't eat untill about mid march. It's not just the temperature from my observation but also the day/night cycle tells them when to "wake up".

hibernate? this one is interesting to discus.
if before raised indoors, n have a plan to keep outdoors, i think the best idea is how to built outdoors ponds that can fit for koi fish n turtle. from the diy pond that i read, maybe u need deeper pond n wide pond plus aquatic ecosystem with drain plug n good filter pond. deep pond that has a function in the cold season can adjust the temperature of the fish swim deeper down. turtle has a cold blood which can adjust the temperature cool in nature. you do not need to teach your turtle to live in the winter, whats you need is to prepare a deep pond and reduce food rations during the winter. essentially maintain koi in the winter is almost the same as turtle.
the reason your RES become aggresive with other turtle are:
1. not enough space to swim, n basking n play.
2. breeding season, most male will aggresive with other turtle
3. improper diet feeding, for large turtle feed 2x a week
