Squirrel water-skis through Austin
Austin audiences went nuts over a water-skiing squirrel named Twiggy this weekend at the 2008 Austin Boat Show.
Perhaps a water-skiing squirrel would be more believable as an animated animal playfully winking at the camera while gliding along the water surface.
Twiggy was the spectator favorite at the Austin Convention Center as she held on to miniature ski handles, placed each of her feet on one ski and completed a lap around her own inflatable squirrel-sized lake.
Speaker, owner and trainer Tabatha Best explained the development of the Twiggy show.
In 1978 a baby squirrel was blown out of its nest during a hurricane and was rescued by Chuck and Lou Ann Best. The feeble animal became a household pet and nibbled through Lou Anns plants leaving only twigs behind.
Naming the pet Twiggy seemed fit.
Chuck Best soon bought a remote control boat he said was for his daughters birthday. Friends and family teased him by saying he had really bought it for himself.
Soon thereafter Chuck and Lou Anne began teaching Twiggy to water ski using the remote control boat.
As soon as local media got a hold of the story, Twiggy was on her way to fame.
Twiggys first national coverage occurred on the show Real People. She has been on the Bozo show and has even done a Dunkin Doughnuts commercial.
This squirrel gets around.
Twiggys celebrity-status has gotten her out of the baggage hold on airplanes and into the lap of luxury, better known as her owners lap, as she travels side by side with passengers.
Austinites saw the seventh Twiggy to perform this act.
Twiggys career has been successful and with her talented abilities she could be the next big thing in entertainment.
