As far as i know the two popular types are columbian and argentine ...so as the name implies: south america.

All species of Tegu come from South and Central America, as far as I know.

Here is a good resource...

My Golden Tegu does not like water...this is my first Tegu, so I'm not sure if it's all Tegus, that do not like water.

Tegu are for the most part omnivorus but some have carnivorus preferences;) Argentines black and white tegus and reds are the ones that take most vegetable matter. Goldens or colombians however rarely take vegetable matter. They are land dwelling animals that ocasionaly like to take a bath

they come from colombia, argentina, and paraguay(sp?).

the B&W argentines are more popular than the colombian. as far a B&W tegues go. i dont think the B&W come from paraguay. i could be wrong. the colobian B&W are also called gold tegus.

reds come from argentina and paraguay. with the main difference being that the ones from paraguay tend to have more white in them as opposed to black.

and alot of people argue over the geographic distibution of the blue tegus. very few have been seen in the wild, leading alot of people to beleive that they are a sub-group of the B&W tegu.

reds and B&W will take animal protein and fruit. the fruit helps them shed. Blues and colombians eat only animal protein.

B&W colombians are the cheapest, and also are also less likely to tame down. i had one a while back and he was a beast.

Argentine B&W tame down very nicely and from what i hear are fun to work with.

Red tegus are the biggest mass wise. the are generally about the size of a full grown adult B&W but weigh a tad more.

Blues are the smallest. reaching about 3' in total length. they tend to tame down nicely. and are a light blue/white with black background. these are also the most expensive of the group.

with any of the tegus you need to have room for a large enclosure.
6x2x2 being the absolute minimun. and an 8x3x3 being the best.
