i pretty much know nothing so tell me everything.lol. Like Tank requirements. Water requirements. Would a ph of 7.0 be ok? Breeding. Sexing. Everthing please.. I saw a pair in the pet store with fry not for sale now but i think they would be cool to have in their own tank. Thanks.....Drew

If you have a look at the = African Riverine & Madagascar page you will find loads on them.

oh thats right they are african, thanks.lol

Like the previous poster said, they're African riverines. I've got many of them...

Last year, I got a group to put outside in a plastic kiddie pool for the summer. I brought them in in the fall. I've got a pair with fry in a 33 x-long. I have another bunch in another 33 x-long waiting to go back outside to the kiddie pool.

My pH is 7.0. Sexing is easy once they get a bit of size to them. The males have a slight hump on their heads. Females are always smaller.

Here are a few bad photos of my pair with their cloud of fry.

They are very cool fish...brutal for their size to other fish when spawning.

ya at what size can they be sexed easily
and some more tips and pics would be appreciated

Nice color on your jewel pair.

They are really tolerant on water parameters. Mine are in slightly acidic soft water. They are good parents to their fry and yes they do get brutal when they spawn. My pair killed an 8" flowerhorn when they spawned.

I can tell sex by about 2.0 inches. Before that, it's a guessing game.

As for more tips...I keep small clay flower pots on their sides in my tanks. They're used for shelter and spawning sites. I also keep java moss in my tank with fry. Good for sheltering the little ones.

They're honestly, really easy fish to keep. Not really fussy on water parameters or temps.

we got some nice jewels at puppy center, stop in when your in the hartford area, we actually have wild's i think

they are very easy fish to care for, are not picky about water conditions at all. I've even seen breeding pairs in mbuna tanks.
