As the title suggests, I am considering getting one.

But I know little about the fish...

Please share your experience and pictures and videos if you have any over the years.

Well mine is very timid and only eats bloodworms. So it would be nice if he has its own tank or with fish that don't compete with him for food. They like to dig under substrate snd are really cool. When I do see mine it's always fun to watch him eat and swim around

I think it might be a bad idea after all. My tank is open top. The water level is not up to the top. There is about 5.5 inches between the water level and the top of the tank. I am not sure if that will be sufficient to prevent fish jumping out.....It normally does for most other fish...I have kuhli loaches in a small open top tank and they never tried jumping out..
 
That's my pond where I want to put a peacock eel or similar small variety.

You can see the water level I am keeping it at. It has 7 clown loaches as crew. The substrate is sand and also plants in pots around the tank. At this water level it holds about 185G/700L or a bit more.

As long as its open top, expect that they could jump anytime... not to mention sneak into filter returns etc...
 
They are very shy and if you have other aggressive eaters like most cichlids you have to target feed them.

I have a peacock eel in with geos and angels and I have to use a tube to put bloodworms in a cave that only he can get to. It's kind of more work than you want to feed a fish but I believe they can be fed once a week. Although I feed mine every 3 days with lots of blood worms. During the night he is very active and swimming around the tank.
