I'm gonna get a FX5 for a 125 gal.

Everyone talks highly of them but I want to know the few kinks they might have. It will be the only filter on the tank other than an AC110 powerhead w/ a quick attach filter.

Please list some "off-brand" media that you have found to work well in your FX5.

Thanks
Jamie

umm for startes they aint worth wat they ost in aus there recommended fer 725 but i see em fer 495. thyre piain to maintain.like because there so large there heavy to get out of weird cabinets. there a paint to setup but htere very good at mech filtration imo

the best comercially avaibl canister filter but not worth the pric e theyre sold for

tiny micro bubbles
I have had problems with bubbles the whole year Ive owned mine.Ive replaced the hoses a few times and practically rebuilt the whole thing but I cant get rid of em,only lesson them by not putting any mechanical filtration in the trays and keeping the sponges pretty clean.

sometimes it sprays out the bubbles like I had a venturi on it :irked:

other than that it seems okay I guess.

Mine does not wash my dishes. That is pretty much my only complaint.

When you need to clean it out you drain it out the bottom, lift out the trays, clean the sponges/replace the media, fill it up, put the top back on and turn on. Never any problems.

i have had 2 FX5's on two seperate tanks for over a year now. I absolutely love them, but my only suggestion would be to NOT buy the expensive blue and white (fine particulate) pads for the middle of the canister. i use polyester quilt batting from good ol walmart and ceramic rings (oh, and purigen in pantyhose). the blue and white circular pads are just really expensive, and they clog in a few days-making your water outtake flow drop drastically.

also, if you use sand substrate just remember to have your intake well above the sand (as with any canister)... and it will work fine.

Thanks for the replies everyone:)

Haha, well I need one that does because my fiancee won't clean the dishes, LOL

Thanks Navy, I buy the cheaper blue and white rolls of filter media from my LFS. I think it is about 16-18" wide and I buy it by the foot. They charge $0.90 per linear foot and I just cut it to fit my other canister's trays. I also use it for my Penguin HOB filters. When my Rite size "C" filter media was dirty, Ijust tore off the media glued to the plastic and attached the blue and white media with rubberbands. It has saved me a lot of $$$;)

Thanks a lot, that was a very good discussion. I went ahead and purchased a FX5 last night on ebay for about $144 plus $40 shipping. I have always liked Ehiem but if you overstocked your tanks just the least bit then extra filtraion is always needed with ehiem. Still a good filter though. I'll just have to see how the Fluval works for me. Thanks again;)

My only complaint is the energy usage. haha 300 plus now for my electric with 6 tanks.

Where you at down south? I run 11 tanks and gonna be 12 when I get my filter. My bill runs around 300 in the winter on a 1300 sp ft house built in 1943!!!!! It's my first house and was a foreclosure when I bought it. It's going on the market in the spring of 09' I completely remodeled it including more insultion and new windows, etc but I just finished all of that so not sure what the elect. bill will be next winter.
