Title says it all, I need the most accurate way to tell them apart, I don't care if I have to stare at them for an hour :D

I want a shortnose so bad and my LFS have no idea what the gars they got are :screwy:

run a search, compare the photos, they are all here in the forum. it's not an easy skill, and there are constantly surprises. a lot of time one has to wait for development until the fish is 3-5" to make solid ID's...and LFS are notorious for mis-labeling gars--

PS-- for starters check out this juvenile/young of the year (YOY) gar ID key:

identifying juvi gars is about the only thing i have trouble with now. cuz they all look the same. i can ID them them as adults and sub-adults.

mine looks like the one at the very top, but isnt a shortnose but i know they do look similar
