My memorial day weekend started with a bang. Literally, the a.c. fan motor (maybe) broke. Even if we were willing to pay the arm and leg for holiday rates Monday would be the soonest ( coincidence a double time day?) Anyhow... I live in Texas and its already 90's time here and all my tanks are between 84 and 87°f. Mostly new world cichlids with 2 African tanks. I worry... unnecessarily? Ice cubes? Water changes?

Water changes and ice in a zip lock bag will help, keep your air pumps running as the warmer the water the oxygen levels go down in the tank.

With largish tanks, it will take a while for temps to rise or fall due to ambient temps. That's good as you can drop it down with WC and then take breaks until night time. Just bring the temps down slowly.

Thanks, this was my first post so I had to wait to see it. I am doing as suggested and your right my 55 and 20L's hardly changed until a cool water change about 30% with a sudden drop of about 3°f none seemed to mind the discus are to young to jump into spawn behavior but my angels are starting to get a bit territorial. I did find one brichardi fry on the floor mon . morn. jumped?
Guy comes tomorrow. I wish my first post was different. Like cant wait till I get a six footer (tank) for an arowana...but thanks again

I wouldn't be worried with mid to upper 80's. I keep my tanks around 82-84 all the time. Just point a fan at the tanks and they will be fine. Unles it hits into the 90's...IMO. Maybe a add an airstone or 2

I would invest in a decent portable a/c unit in case this ever happens again . I live in fl and If my ac goes out I know I can place the unit in the room where my tanks are and control the temp quite easily as a temporary fix

keep the air going is good enough, 84-87F is nothing for these tropical fish as they grow fastest at temperature from 85-90F.

If you have not already fixed the problem, freeze a few milk jugs full of water and drop one at a time in untill you get down to the temp you want.. But as stated above I wouldnt worry unless the temp hit above 88..

A few years back, my discus tank hit 94° I didn't lose a single fish.
A fan on top of tank blowing in works well

A couple of my tanks regularly get up to the upper 80's during the summer. The one tank peaked at 92 last year. No issues for tropical as long as you have adequate aeration.
