I read on a site

"One way of calming down a quarrelsome Jack Dempsey cichlid is to keep the water temperature down. The recommended temperature range for a Jack Dempsey cichlid is 72-86° F (22-30° C), but many aquarists make sure that the temperature never goes above 78° F (25.5 degrees C) since warm water can increase the aggressiveness in some Jack Dempsey cichlids." (http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/cichlid/jackdempsey.php)

and wondering is this true? what temp do yall keep it on for your jd's

I would say 77~80*F is ideal... going a little over or a little under won't cause any major concern...

Yes lower temperatures can decrease aggression in fish... but I do not support making a fish uncomfortable to discourage it's natural behavior. If someone wants a less aggressive fish they should have picked a less aggressive species...

I target most of my tanks at 80*F, including several tanks with Dempseys.

my dempseys have been in a 55 for several years in my garage.the water temp in the summer is 90 plus at times and ive noticed no ill effects as these fish will breed about every 6-8 weeks if i let them.the tank is heated to 80 in the winter and ive noticed no difference in agression they do eat a little less but not much.
