I have a Tanganyika community tank kept in a lab at 72 degrees constantly. Will the tank be OK if Its kept at 72? Or do I really need a heater. So far the fish seem fine.

They should do fine generally as was said 76-78 is better, but what you have to remember is the filter and lights will throw off some heat, so if the ambient temp is 72 the tank temp will probably be 73-74ish.

it's at the bottom limit of their temp range, so keep an eye on them. they could start to have nutritional difficulties, or be more susceptible to diseases.
maybe put the tank next to the coffee machine for some free radiant heat.
