It probably depends on the species, and maybe even on the local strains of certain species, but gar are very adaptable. The Trinity River in east Texas, along with its tributaries and associated lakes, is home to all five of the mainland species. Water temperatures range from a low of about 2 degrees C to a high of around 35 C, although monthly average temperatures (averaged over the years) range from a minimum of 7 C to a maximum of about 31 C. These are probably not the ultimate survival extremes, but all five non-tropical species can at least survive from 2 to 35 C, assuming there are no other associated factors that might kill them.
Thanks, Pagojoe. I asked because I will put my gars outdoor and will not regulate the water temperature. The year-round temperatures in my area range from 5C to 35C. In the mean time, I can rest assured that my gars will survive!
