According to fishbase.org:

Osteoglossum bicirrhosum: 24-30C/ 75-80f

So why keep them inn water above 80f/30c ?

the water even gets lower in temp then that. they just give that as a rule of thumb. most keep them at higher temps to help prevent sickness. most of the ailments your aro could face can't survive at higher temps. i personally used to keep my aros at 86f. now i am in the 68-80f range depending on the day and if we are cooking alot. i took out the heaters from the tank and just keep my house at 75f or so. it is also a 'new trend', in the older days 70f+- was more the norm. i do recomend that young aros get kept at 80-86f as they are more sensitive. they will also grow faster at the higher temps.

83 for me and my guys are growing like weeds.

Okay that does make sense.

I'm pretty sure they experience water in the 90s for the duration of the summer.

Considering the majority of the amazon river system is within 10 degrees south of the equator, it's always summer. The entire system gathers water from 5 degrees north to 20 degrees south of the equator. The amazon region basically has two seasons. The rainy season from November into June, with the exception of the rio negro which is from February to June. This is what cools the temperature of the amazon. The dry season, June through October the waters recede and with no cool water flowing the temperature rise. Here you may find rather high temps in shallow pools, where many fish may perish.

With in the home aquarium, for baby to young aro, temp needs to be in the 82-84 degree range, I find 84 degrees works best. Once the are 10-12" they will do fine with the temp being 78-80 degrees.

Thanks for the clarification Bderick67.

i came from and grew up the equator of the earth just like most arowanas r, it does get hot when on the "summer" season which last about 6 mos even then the water is colder the 30C, even could be (25C range at midnight to morning)) and the water will be very cold when its the rainy season which is also about 6 mos.
i dont think the water will ever reach over 30C(86F) there especially on the river when they move alot, if u talking about the water that baked under the direct sun and no aeration..yeah they could reach over 30C around 12-4PM
