Tempered or non-tempered

I was just wondering if there is anyway I would be able to tell the difference between tempered and non-tempered glass in an aquarium?

if it shatters into little bits, it's tempered.

If that doesn't appeal to you, do you know who the manufacturer is? Some only use tempered glass on the bottom panel, depending on the size of the tank. Large tanks are more likely to use tempered glass, if it's less than 50 gallons it probably isn't.

So if I were to drill a tank for a sump pump I would need non-tempered glass, correct?

Yes, you can't drill tempered glass.

Great thread and tip... but definitely agree tempered glass when it breaks will shatter and not just "crack"...
