So,
one of the glass suppliers has several tempered low-iron 1/8th" (3mm?) 36" x 48" panels that he imported for some sort of solar install ~20years ago; they've been taking up storage space since & he wants rid of 'em. IE: deep discount, though we've not discussed specifics.

What could one get away with with these panels, as cutting's not an option?
If not a square, I'd be happy to do the bottom/ends/bracing in other glass, steel, concrete or ply.

When people say that tempered is >5x stronger, does this mean that 1/8" = 5/8"?
... or is it an "it doesn't really work that way" situation?

'Tanx,

Andrew

1/8 will just shatter on you IMHO, tempered does not have any give.

... having said that, refridgerator shelving is 1/8" tempered, and it supports all manner of weight and clumsiness in the application thereof. It's certainly not only my wife that, at least once very year, puts an XLb half-thawed turkey on a slightly too small plate on the lower shelf, then surrounds it with heavy bottles of Prosecco & bagged potatoes.

5x stronger does not correlate to 5x thickness comparison.

The only thing 1/8" tempered glass that large has value for is a window, like window holding back air not water.
