Which tends to be the meaner/more aggresive fish; Jag or Freddie? How do they tend to act when together? Would they be fairly equal and not have one beat the crap out of the other on a regular basis when together? Like if you were to put a Oscar and Jag together.

Id say anythings possible. Maybe if you could pick up opposite sexed fish you would have no problem at all. In my opinion, firemouths will most likely end up on the menu, convicts stand a somewhat decent chance. You will never know until you roll the dice though. I had a Jag that turned evil overnight and killed the majority of my tank, even attacking a pleco. On the other hand I had one that would constantly get punked out by a comparable sized Dempsey. Either way I have noticed that they can get pretty grumpy at around 6-7 inches. I guess thats when they realize that they can kill other fish fairly easy.

yeah in that size tank i think your best option would be to get opposite sexed fish and then you should be ok, jags also get larger than freddies so even if they were the same temperament the jag would have the advantage when larger but yeah i think jags are more aggressive anyways and they are also more personable, ive never had freddies but from what i hear they are more shy of people, but yeah FMs would def not stand a chance but cons may well be ok, i would make sure they are all the same gender though or you will have issues with a mating pair. you could do silver dollars as well if you like them

Yeah I was thinking of setting up either a Mexico, Guatemala, or Nicaragua biotope and thats why I mentioned Firemouths.. also because I like the look of them but I know they are a more docile CA cichlid.

I was thinking I'd like to make it a Parachromis tank but not just have one of the Parachromis being picked on. Like maybe a Freddie, Jag, Red Tiger Mota and two convicts. Would a 125 still be okay for that? Probably at the very max for stocking right?

Yes I was thinking all one gender except for the Cons, free food right? But then I get worried I'll end up with 5 billion convicts! haha

i dont think the tank is big enough to have that many parachromis together especially if the same gender, but what we were saying is to actually have opposite gender like male jag and female freddie or rtm and maybe they would be ok together and make sure the cons are all the same gender because you will have problems with a breeding pair of cons, they are small but they will straight up OWN 4ft of your tank when they are breeding, they are fearless and many members can contest to their toughness against much larger fish when they are protecting eggs/fry

Sorry simple misunderstanding, yes I'll go with opposite genders. The tank I would be putting them in is actually 8'x18" so a 125 with two extra feet of length. Sound better now? haha

So would you suggest something like;
female jag
male freddie
male RTM
male or female cons

I picked female for the Jag because they're smaller, it would give more room for her, and they'd all be roughly the same size should a scrap break out. Sound about right?

Sounds good to me. Seriously though don't get two opposite sex convicts. They will most certainly reproduce like crazy, and they will absolutely dominate their territory against any fish in any size tank. Had it happen in my 220 and it was nuts. Fought off my Dovii on a daily basis. They are relentless about protecting fry.

oh ok so its actually quite larger than a 125, but yeah if your gonna add the third parachromis then maybe you should go all females or something, because if its just the one male and female and they pair its no big deal but then if a pair forms then the odd one out will get beaten, and with these species the females look fairly similar so you wouldnt be missing out on color too much and you could maybe add in another one then, i would make the cons all the same gender as whatever your other fish are because the females especially will readily interbreed with other species and may pair with one of the larger parachromis and cause havoc if they are males..... hmmm yeah if your going to have more than just the two large parachromis then i think i would go for an all male tank or all female tank... (sorry for the confusion lol, but with cichlids its really just a gamble finding out which ones will tolerate each other you may have a female jag that kills everything and another that gets punked all the time)
