So I am bored today and looking on Craigslist, bad combo for me, and I find this unused hot tub shell from a warehouse for sale. It has no holes even drilled in it yet, it's just the shell in a nice brown color. So I start thinking how nice this would be to frame and then drill for filters and use as a pond. They are selling it cheap, $125, but now I start wondering how big this thing really is and how many gallons and how much filteration I need, etc. I also wondered if there's anything I need to worry about with the shell - like would it have bad stuff in it or on it that would hurt fish, or could I scrub it down and use it? Here's a pic of it too.

I think its good you didn't buy it...but thats just my opinion, my reason for saying that is it would probably be more work than its worth

I would also be concerned about chemicals in/on the plastic. Some newer hot tubs even have microban in the plastic to inhibit microbial growth.

That was why I wondered if I should try it. I liked the idea of a hot tub form because I had planned to drill it for the filter and with no holes in the form it would be nice to pick where it was drilled. Not knowing what chemicals could be leeching out was a concern as well as the microban stuff. I also have wondered how safe it is to use pool filters (new of course) for ponds. I have seen some people doing it and it works fine from what I have seen but I haven't looked into it enough yet to know if there are issues I don't know of or if there are some brands that are fine and others aren't. Derailing my own thread now, time to go...
