Yet again, I am greatly interested in raising a fahaka puffer. After searching the web for information on the fish I have only found surface info that is often conflicting.

I would LOVE a good source for some in depth fahaka info.

My current main concerns are:

1. Sand: What sand is best? I'm looking for heavy soft sand that looks nice. Heavy so that it wont get sucked up when cleaning my tank and debris wont get under it. Soft so my Fahaka will gladly bury himself in the sand. Nice looking so that my tank is awesome =).

2. Food: This is perhaps my biggest concern. I would love to know more specifics on feeding. I know I need to mix it up and make sure to give him hard food for his teeth, but I have no idea where to get it how to feed it.
Should I raise my own crayfish? Should I buy frozen food? How often should I feed this or that food etc.?

3. Enviornment: What environment do fahaka's like? Driftwood? Plants?

4. Water: What can a fahaka tolerate. My tap ph is around 8, but I can bring it down some. Will they get used to different water well?

5. Petting: If i raise the puffer from about 2" and put my hand in everyday and pet him will he eat my hand off later?

For the record:
I have a 90 gallon which will be upgraded as soon as the puffer reaches 12" and maybe sooner.

-- Any other comments/suggestions are obviously welcome.

Thanks

I'll start with this one;

Personally, i'm not sure how much i would trust a puffer to hand feed them once they reach say 10"-12"+ only because if they nip your finger by accident, your almost guaranteed to be losing at least the tip of your finger...

But either way, check out the links PP sent you, since there is a lot of good info on that site...

cool thanks guys... as for hand feeding, I don't really plan on hand feeding him past a certain point, but what about petting him with no food?

Depends on how vicious he is. I can pet my fellow but I rarely do.

I can pet and hold a few of my puffs, but I would not do that often, it is probably stressful...besides you will get plenty of interaction in other ways!

Hand feeding and a Fahaka?? Perhaps if you had a huge chunk of something dead, a prawn or large shrimp-but you would have to know when to let go...However, it is much more fun to drop food in and watch them hunt!

My fahaka rarely ever buried himself. Your water is fine.

He loves his fake mangrove cave:

He's a very happy fellow:

As far as upgrading--since Filbert (at 10 years old) is only very close to 12", it is my opinion that he is stunted in the 125g he lives in.
