Hi guys, thanks for the compliments. I sold Zena away for AUD800! Now left with little gal (18") and boy (20") which I intend to keep for long.

Yes, the plant is Water Wisteria or Hygrophila Difformis. Very easy to grow with or without substrate. You just need 1-2 wpg of planting light and some seachem Excel, iron and florish. I don't use base fertilizer, just some iron ball around the roots. I am fairly certain the iron balls can be used with pebbles substrate too. I also don't dose according to recommendations (too lazy and too expensive) after the plants achieved the landscape that I wanted.

I cut down the dosage by 50-70%; just enough to keep the plants healthy and green. Sechem Excel and H. Difformis help to control the algae, and the latter also helps to take up nitrite and some nitrate.

I would have gone for DSB (deepsandbed) for denitrifying purpose if the tank is deep enough. Unfortunately it is not so my substrate is only up to 3" depth. I also keep some freshwater clams and Malayan Trumpet Snails to help purify the water and control the algae. These mollusc move around the sand to prevent toxic gaseous from building up.

I even trained my basses to take Hikari Massivores so that I don't always have to catch wild fish to feed them when I am lazy or busy. They LOVE it now! The whole set-up fits my bill as I am a lazy guy when it comes to tank maintenance.

:)
