My two 8" tems have developed hole in the head. I have been reading up about it and apparently it's caused by poor water quality and poor diet. I did a water test and it showed 0.25 for ammonia. I believe this is because I have somehow damaged some of the filter bacteria last time I carried out maintenance.
As far as feeding goes I give them prawn everyday and bloodworm about once a week. Is this okay or do I need to give them a lot more variety. I'm struggling to get them on pellets and the only other thing I can think of to try is whitebait or earth worms.

My plan is to do a 50% water change 2-3 times a week, add salt to the tank and try to feed them better.
Is this enough or do I have to use medication to cure the problem?
Please help.

Vary the diet, add salt, 1 tbsp per 10 gal bump up the water temp, and the waterchanges are a good start.

Bump the temp add some salt and keep up with the water changes that you said your going to do, and try and get your bass onto pellets asap, you just gotta have patience but they will come around, having a staple diet of pellets is the best as it provides all the nutritional value with prawns and blood worms as an occasional treat, i hope they shake it off soon, good luck :)

do you feed them gold fish ? thats pretty much the number one cause. It's from a lack of vitamin b1. Goldfish have a protein that destroys it, so your fish is suffering from that.

I agree with this guy but med them for it and then do the rest of the above. I went through this. Water quality is a big factor in my eyes. Good luck

better water quality and better diet will eventually make it heal

I'm not sure whether I should med them yet. I'll start with the water changes and salt. Hopefully I can get them on pellets, 2 out of 6 of my cichla are eating pellets so hopefully the rest will follow soon. Will the HITH disappear as the fish get bigger?

I have had HITH disease on my ex orino too. Goldfish are only half the story, the toxic matters in our tank are the problem.

My solution is simple; plant your tank with real plants. Any fast and easy grower can be had; check my photos. Even water lettuce help. Never had this problem any more once i have a planted monster tank. These living plants help remove toxic matters that are harmful to your fish and improve the water quality too. Hey, fish are like us, they love greeneries too for the same reasons!

PS. I don't do WC, only top up once the sump gets dangerously low.
