What are your thoughts about this "variant" of RBP / natt?

I've been thinking about adding a piece to my existing Pygos comm and it has become available now - at a price point that is about 30 percent higher than a Piraya.

Secondly, the group that I am keeping is about one month old - would it be disastrous to put in a single Ternetzi into a group of 3 caribe and 3 Piraya?

Appreciate your thoughts and experience on this. :)

I've already given you my thoughts in a different thread. However, being the collector that you are, you will probably regret NOT getting it, more than you will getting it. Again, these are different times than when I kept P's. If fugupuff says they're super hard to get, then don't miss this opportunity (providing you can afford it). Wayne Mah said (in another forum) that Below Water (my source back then -- I'm in Canada) doesn't even bring in rare P's anymore. So even if I wanted to get back into P's, I don't know where I would source them from.

As far as adding the ternetzi, I think it will be OK (better now, than later anyways). It would be sweet if you could swing 3 though. Good luck.

If the filteration and tank space allows it then go for it. Just make sure its around the same size as the rest. Dont keep decour in the tank......open tanks help reduce territories which is usually the cause of canabalism over hunger

Back in 2003-2004 terns were just as common as reds and comparable as far as price (not much higher). Piraya used to be very common but slightly higher in price.

what happened? Why are they so rare now?

I remember when I had my reds and was on the piranha forums the sentiment seemed to be "meh, terns are okay, just bigger reds with bigger appetites" but people really seemed to be much more into caribe and especially piraya.

I think laws in South America have changed as for as deporting native fish. I think the Piranha Hobby in general went through a growth spirt back then allowing importers to import tons of fish (quantity lowers price)...

Laws there changed and laws here. Lots of restrictions on size of fish and from where they can be imported. Here in the NY/NJ area they used to allow piranha to be imported into JFK/NY as a transit stop and then shipped elsewhere. But seeing piranha are illegal in NY they now prevent any imports coming into NY airports which has made things even harder locally here.
