I'm sure every fish keeper has, at one time or another, used flowerpots in their aquariums. I've never had nor heard of any problems using these inexpensive caves in aquariums.
I recently found 2 terracotta chimney pipes in a local hardware store. The hole is approx. 3 1/2" and each pipe is 14" long. I bought the pipes and placed them in a tank with a dozen juvenile albino Polypterus palmas.
When I check the tank the next morning, all of the polys were dead. I removed the pipes and placed them in a small tub to test the water. The water had a pH of 7.2 before placing the pipes in. After an hour in the tubs pH was off the scale below 5.
I just want everyone to be aware that not all terracotta products are the same.

Tell me about it!!! But, I have to let others know of things like this to prevent this from happening to their fish.
Also keep in mind, if you have a problem with one tank a year, that equals over 100 problems per year in the number of tanks I maintain.
