Terrapin Pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So here is the finished job- the water still needs to clear up and we need to add some plants but it is STUNNING. Love the atmosphere. Also need to add terrapins and fish?IMG_20200807_135143.jpgIMG_20200807_135140.jpgIMG_20200807_135135.jpgIMG_20200807_130457.jpgIMG_20200807_130453.jpg

That is lovely! How long is the season warm enough for you to keep your turtles outdoors? I know that looking at my pond buried beneath snow throughout the winter can be frustrating; hopefully that "down time" will be minimal for you and your turtles.

Also, a question: the spot at the far back corner appears to allow the turtles to clamber up to it, and the wall is only slightly higher than the top of that "hump". Are you certain that they will not be able to escape at that point? Perhaps a slight heightening of the wall there might be in order?

The turtles could be kept in the pond all year- but the terrapins will probably hibernate if the temperature goes under 0 celsius. I will have to see when it comes to winter, I might just bring them inside into their old terrapin tank for 2 or 3 months as it gets cold here in the UK.

About the terrapins escaping that way, I don't think they are big enough to do it as to climb up they need to be a bit bigger. I think, even if i heighten the wall there, the terrapins will find a way to escape. The thing is, that is ok because there aren't any routes of escape out of our garden!
