Yesterday I did a water change (50 %)

this morning my Polypterus (2.5 ")and my 2 Synodontis catfish(3") were all DEAD. My CK and 2 oscars and 2 Plecos are still alive but very "droopy"

What could have caused this???

Did you use a water conditioner?

The reason i ask is that I live out in the country and I have never needed to use a water conditioner in the last 15 years.
Then I did a 25% water change on my 3 fish tanks and killed all my fish!

The problem turned out to be caused by the addition of CHLORAMINE that started to be added to my country water.

The well water we get from the county had never had chloramine in it before, I had no way to know it had just started to be added to my water.

Also, the pet store I took a sample in for testing had no means to test for chloramine.

The fix was to now just use a good Water Conditioner in all my water changes and this stops the chloramine from killing my fish in the future.

I will get one this afternoon from the LFS. Hope I will be in time :(

Thank you

While doing waterchanges on multiple tanks at once I've forgotten to add conditioner a few times myself. Luckily either my fish were hearty enough or my water was good enough not to have any ill effects on them. Sorry for you losses and good luck with the rest of your wet pets.

I would recommend picking up Seachem Prime, I think it is the best water conditioner in the market today.

Sorry for your loss. I remember when my water source switched to adding chloramine quite a long time ago. Fortunately I was aware of it, so I got dechlorinating chemicals.

I personally recommend (and obviously use) Kordon's Novaqua and Amquel (One is red, one is green; they are to be used together.) I simply add the water then add the chemicals right after, and it works fine. Anyway, good luck.

i agree that seachems Prime is the best thing i have found so far-ill never use anything else.

I have forgot to add stuff to my water, but luckily its not as bad, I only USE R/O water so if I forget yo put in the trace elements all is not lost.

Very sorry to hear of your loss. I would recommend getting Prime as well
