The deep south
Rescued a 8'' True Alligator gar from the LFS who has one incredibly bad case of popeye, or eye cloud. It is repulsive!!! There is a tumor or something growing out of this poor guys eye socket. He gets salted and waterchanged everyday and does not seem to be making any signs of recovery. I've been hoping the eyeball will just fall off, but its just getting worse after 2 weeks. Any other medications i can look into? I really hate to use them but for this case my standard ways of fishkeeping are not doing the trick. I am seriously contemplating SURGERY! I think it might be the best way to save him. Im worried about the stress involved with this though. Any past experiences are much appreciated, thankyou.

Once again....

However, I wouldn't say it's a "terrible buy". Anytime you can try and help one of these great creatures when they are in need is awesome. They are strong, rugged, durable and long lasting, keeping treating him well and he'll come around. But yeah, we need some pics man.

this is def one we need pics of. WC good WQ salt and temp is the best course of action untill we get pics

i do have a question, if it was a "terrible buy" like you said in your title, why did you buy it?

Man every time i see abused fish i end up buying and trying to save them. I know where your coming from bro. I have like 8 walmart fish I "saved"... Just to have them replaced by others.:nilly:

Not a terrible buy a terrible case of something lol....ill get pics soon i dont have internet at my new house yet, just moved. I put the poor guy in a 10, it was my only choice to try and coax him to eat some feeders. He seems to have colored up a bit more but he hasent eaten in about 2 weeks. Continuing salt a w/c's. Anyone ever perform surgery? youll c when i get the pics up, it really seems like the best idea

pics before u even consider surgery
like i said WC good water quality, salt and high temp

Just a thought.. it may be a parasite. I would consider prazipro or similar. I agree though.. I wouldn't touch it, intentionally blinding an animal is not something to take lightly. continue w/ your treatments atm and post pics asap. coloring up is usually a positive sign in fish. Gar can take abit to settle in, and are also very hardy fish in general. and 2 weeks w/out food isn't much to worry about.

i guess thats just persona preference. i view these "pets" just as animals that have no conscience or soul. so, if one is all beat up or in bad health, its no skin off my back. thats just how i look at it. im not saying you should abuse an animal, but they are just animals that have no conscience or soul

I agree with you in the idea that these animals are not self-aware and whether they are in a 10 gallon or a 500 gallon aquarium is a meaningless concept to them, but I'm not sure what the presence of a conscience or soul has to do with an animal feeling pain through their nerve endings. Pain is pain, no matter what is feeling it.
