I have a frabill minnow trap that I picked up from walmart to catch minnows with. But, in the half a dozen times I've used it I've caught maybe four fish 3 green sunfish and 1 bluegill. I've used bread, wet dog food, dry dog food, wet cat food, and even a slim Jim once (caught the bluegill with that). Is there something special that I'm not doing right or do I have it in the wrong places? I usually throw it in shallow creeks for an hour or two. I've left it overnight before and just caught a crayfish. I just have had terrible luck.

Place the trap where u see schools of minnows in the stream. Ive caught 20-50 large "chubs" at a time with only ritz crackers and yellow american cheese. Even in tiny creeks/streams, look for the largest pools in the stream and theres usually a school of minnows in each pool. Times of high water are usually not good but when the fish are trapped in individual pools during low water set ur trap. Trib creeks feeding into larger rivers or lakes are also a good place to trap suckers, chubs, perch, bluegill and catfish. Golf course ponds also provide good baitfish, set the trap at night and retrieve it early in the morning before anyone shows up.

Agreed with previous posts...What's the frabil trap?I have the type that has two halves with openings on the ends that are tied together.I've found that a slice of plain bread and a few hours works good enough as bait but success depends on location.

I would get a couple more and experiment with different locations. Also, try mixing velveeta or american cheese with bread or crackers for bait. With that mixture it should be easier to make firmer bait balls that force the fish into the trap. Stuff that breaks up easily can be eaten from outside the trap a lot easier than the bait balls.
