I am a fairly new owner (2 months?) of a fetherfin catfish. I got it pretty small at about an inch long, and it is coloring and growing well.

Since I got this fish small I didn't want to introduce it straight away with my bigger group of fish in my 90 gallon, I introduced it into my livingroom 29 gallon. The current list of fish:

4 asst corrys
1 african dwarf frog
1 betta
1 tiny albino long finned pleco
1 blue spot gourami (~4")
1 BGK (~5")
and 1 fancy golfball sized pearlscale goldfish

I added the knife so I could see it, he is happy as long as nothing gets near his cave(chases them out), EXCEPT for the featherfin. These 2 seem like they are companions(I got them about the same time). The featherfin hangs out in the cave too, but out of 'line of site' of the BGK(behind him), and all is good.

What I have noticed though, is that any time a cory or especially the GF get near the FF, it'll chase them away from the cave...To the point of almost riding the goldfish at times! I saw this happen a couple times last night.

I think it has laid claim to HIS spot and anyone that gets close to him or his buddy the knife, they get the boot!

Is this typical behavior for featherfins?

Should I be concerned? I do have room in my 55g that I am now keeping heated...Should I move the featherfin and possibly the BGK into this tank so there are just less fish?

I wanted to move the goldy into a bigger tank, but it's my wifes-same with the gourami(Fido and Queen Elizibeth:screwy:)...so the are staying. I am also thinking I should get a bigger tank too, but the area it's in is just right for this tank size.(24x18 corner, next to the window and MY chair)

Featerfins( syndontis) are generally peaceful, but they are territorial towards other bottom dwellers that invade their space. They can and will eat any fish that can fit in their mouths too , so the plan to move him to the 55 is probably a good one. They are often suggested as tankmates for south/central American cichlids just to give you an idea of their level of toughness.

Good to know.

There's no chance of this little one eating any of its tankmates ATM, but I might just wait and let it grow a little more, then just transfer it into the big boy tank-2 oscars , marbled knife, and a couple bichirs in a 90g. The 55 has a few dojo loaches that I am growing out, they are pretty small, so they would most likely be on the menu.

Thanks!
